The Absolute Surrender - Chapter 10: The Banshee's Wrath (2024)

Lilian struggled to maintain her composure as her legs began to tremble, and her mind raced for reassurance. The echo of a haunting, wailing scream cut through her thoughts, and she turned to Obene, her voice barely a whisper.

"Obene..."

"Stay behind me," he instructed firmly, his voice steady despite the growing terror.

Out of the corner of her eye, Lilian spotted an elderly woman draped in grey. Her silver hair flowed like a river of moonlight, and her nails and eyes were disturbingly red. The woman's sorrowful expression was unnervingly at odds with her terrifying appearance. Lilian was about to offer assistance when the air was shattered by another ear-splitting scream. The wailing seemed to penetrate their very souls, leaving Lilian gasping for breath as the pain of the sound became almost physical.

Obene swung his sword with all his might, aiming for the source of the scream, but the blade met only air.

"What is it?" Lilian shouted, her hands clamped tightly over her ears in a futile attempt to block out the sound.

"An unsettled fairy spirit," Obene shouted back, "a creature of darkness—a banshee!"

The noise was relentless, tearing at Lilian's sanity. She wanted to cry out, to beg for it to stop, but her voice was swallowed by the cacophony that seemed to rip her apart from within.

"Lilian!" Obene's voice pierced through the chaos, but it seemed to drift further away with each passing moment.

Then, just as abruptly as it had started, the noise ceased.

Lilian's fleeting hope for peace was abruptly shattered as two ghastly, bony hands emerged from the darkness, reaching out with malevolent intent. With a forceful shove, they sent her crashing to the ground. The cold, unyielding forest floor met her body with a painful jolt, and she cried out, pain echoing through her voice. As she lay sprawled on the damp earth, gasping, Obene sprang to her aid, but the same spectral hands grabbed his ankles with a sinister grip. They yanked him away with brutal strength, tossing him aside like a ragdoll.

"Obene..." Lilian whispered, her voice trembling as her heart raced in panic. Her prayers for this to be a nightmare went unanswered. She heard the distant clamor of his sword against some unseen foe.

Obene gripped his sword tightly, his breaths coming in deep, measured gulps. He closed his eyes for a moment, drawing on the years of grueling training he had undergone—training that had forged his strength and endurance through countless hours of combat. He would not let this creature best him so easily.

As the banshee floated menacingly through the air, her grey dress billowing like a storm cloud, she aimed a strike at his neck. Obene felt a suffocating pressure from the fabric of her dress tightening around him. Without hesitation, he slashed through the material, freeing himself from the deathly grip.

The banshee's laughter, a sinister and hollow sound, reverberated through the trees, dripping with malevolence as she savored every moment of the terror she caused. Her wailing had subsided to a chilling, mirthless cackle that echoed through the night, adding a layer of dread to the already oppressive atmosphere.

Obene darted behind the thick trunks of ancient trees, seeking refuge from the banshee's relentless pursuit. The forest seemed to close in around him, the shadows growing darker and more menacing with every passing second. His heart pounded in his chest as he tried to catch his breath, his eyes scanning the gloom for any sign of the creature.

But the banshee was tireless. She materialized from the shadows, her presence heralded by the sharp rustling of her grey dress against the leaves. Her eyes, like pools of blood, locked onto Obene with a predatory gaze. Hanging from the treetop, her long, spectral form twisted and contorted as she prepared to strike.

With a swift, unnerving grace, the banshee descended toward him. Her hair streamed behind her like a ghostly veil, and her teeth, glinting with an unnatural sheen, were bared in a feral snarl. The deadly arc of her movement was aimed directly at Obene's neck, her razor-sharp teeth poised for a lethal bite.

Obene's instincts kicked in as he swung his sword with all his remaining strength, the blade slicing through the cold, damp air with a resounding whoosh. He could feel the banshee's icy breath against his skin, and the clash of steel and spirit was a desperate, violent dance between life and death. With the last reserves of his strength, Obene swung his sword in a desperate, final strike, hoping to vanquish the fiend before the darkness consumed him completely.

Lilian's ears rang with her desperate shrieks as she watched the banshee's ghastly form latch onto Obene. Her mind spun in a chaotic whirl, the world around her collapsing into a frenzy of sound and movement. All she could focus on was the violent flash of Obene's sword cutting through the darkness, a sweeping arc of steel that seemed to momentarily still the chaos.

A visceral, terrified cry escaped her when the decapitated head of the banshee landed mere feet from her. Its lifeless, white hair splayed out grotesquely, and its hollow, sunken eyes stared blankly. The sharp, monstrous teeth were a ghastly reminder of the creature's malevolent intent, sending a shiver of terror through her. She clapped a trembling hand over her mouth to stifle another scream, but the horror of the sight left her breathless.

The gruesome image of the banshee's severed head haunted her as her mind struggled to process the reality of what had happened. She felt as though her entire body had frozen, caught in a paralyzing state of shock while her thoughts scrambled to catch up. She managed to force herself into action, her gaze snapping to Obene's fallen form.

The rain battered down relentlessly, mingling with her tears as she stumbled towards him. The downpour made her vision a blur, but she wiped her face with desperate energy, trying to clear her sight. Reaching Obene, she gently turned him to face her, a stabbing pain pierced her chest as she saw the blood flowing freely from a gaping wound on his neck. He lay there, unconscious, his face pale and lifeless.

Panic surged through Lilian as she realized the severity of his injuries. The bite marks were deep and fatal, and she was alone in this forsaken forest with no hope of immediate help. The weight of the situation pressed heavily on her, and her heart ached with an intensity she hadn't known before.

"Obene, Obene, please..." she cried out, her voice swallowed by the howling wind and torrential rain. Her pleas went unanswered as the storm carried her cries away. Overwhelmed by despair, she buried her face in his chest, her hands desperately trying to stem the flow of blood and secure his wound.

Suddenly, a strange sensation coursed through Lilian's fingertips. Startled, she pulled her hands away from Obene's wound, only to see them glowing with an eerie, bright light. The light wasn't gentle; it burned with a deep, unsettling heat that made her gasp in pain. She held her glowing hands up against the darkness of the forest, the light casting strange, wavering shadows that danced on the surrounding trees.

Her mind raced, trying to comprehend the sudden and inexplicable change. "What is happening to me?" she thought, her thoughts swirling in confusion and fear. The searing heat was unbearable, a relentless force that felt as if it were consuming her from within. As the light grew stronger, the pain intensified, pushing her to the brink of her endurance.

A surge of agony erupted as the glow became unbearable, and she let out a piercing scream. The heat was overwhelming, consuming her with its intensity. Despite her attempts to save Obene, the scalding sensation spread, and Lilian felt herself being pulled into an abyss of pain and fear.

As the darkness closed in, she clung to Obene, both of them sinking into the abyss together, her final cries swallowed by the unrelenting storm.
